They deserve it, because Yammer is a great product that has ability to improve communications and create transparency by virtually making company’s structure flat. I work for LADevelopers Inc. (http://www.ladevelopers.com) a California based software development firm. We specialize in custom Yammer solutions for enterprise and know this product inside out. Please contact us if you need any help with it.

really well written Adele.. In answer to your question, this (Twitter like tools) will be highly welcomed in an enterprise. This type of use is basically just one more method to communicate, and every time you make it easier to speed communication - this leads to greater productivity...productivity sells. I wrote a blog post a month back highlighting this as just one method that Twitter could do in monetizing Twitter (white labeling Twitter). If you want to read about the other 10 or so business models for micro-blogging you should check out my blog (link above).

If you're interested in Yammer you should also take a look at http://present.ly. It's a micro-blogging site for businesses, but with better features like groups and media sharing.

Very interesting idea, but businesses are made of old fashioned people... in my office, both people who know what Twitter is regard it as a toy that the net elite use, but regular people don't need. The business case for technology paradigm changes at a company has to be as obvious as email was- replacing something that doesn't work with something that does work.

Maybe if we were all using twitter already and had trouble separating business and personal contacts (like when we all stopped adding coworkers to facebook and started adding them to linkedin), this would make more sense. As it is, trying to pitch a cross between project management software, email, IM, and facebook is a hard sell to get people to use, let alone buy.

All that said, I'd love for this to work- I'm going to set up an account now and hope it catches on :)

GREAT writeup, Adele.

My best guess is that we'll see an adoption curve for these in-house networks something like the adoption curve for IM use in enterprise settings. Some people will resist them, sure, but the utility will be obvious and instant to many.

One more thing: at a strategic level, Yammer has neatly side-stepped Twitter's greatest advantage, which is its entrenchment in the lives of its users. In other words, no one wants to have to convince all their Twitter friends to migrate with them to some other service. But in the corporate setting, you *expect* to set up a new social graph limited to your workmates. Nifty.
