The Art of Marketing

The Art of Marketing event is coming to Montreal on September 30, 2010 at the Palais des congrès. Check out this impressive lineup of speakers:

I’m excited about this event because with this group of speakers I know that I’ll learn something new about marketing that I can then apply to my clients’ business (and that of my own.) And with the start of September and the back to school season, learning is on my mind.

Win 1 of 2 pairs of tickets

To help you learn something new about marketing too, here’s your opportunity to win 1 of 2 pairs of tickets that I’m giving away.

Simply answer these 2 questions about learning in the comments section. One winner per question will be selected to receive a pair of tickets to The Art of Marketing (valued at $399 per ticket).

  1. What skills or tools do you want to learn before 2011 to help you improve your marketing efforts or your professional skills?
  2. What, specifically, have you learned since the New Year about marketing and social media that has worked for you and provided your business (or your clients) with value through results?

The contest closes at 11:59 pm EST on September 21, 2010.

Get a discount on tickets and a copy of Linchpin

The Art of Productions, who have kindly provided me with tickets to give away, have also given me a discount code to offer my readers.

Save $50 per ticket on orders of 1 or 2 tickets, or, save $100 per ticket on orders of 3 or more tickets when you use promo code AM26.

The first 10 people to use the discount code will also get a free copy of Seth Godin’s Linchpin – the book he said will be his last one published traditionally. If you are one of the first 10 people to use the code to order tickets, the book will be waiting for for you to pickup at The Art of Marketing conference.

Thanks to The Art of Productions for sponsoring this contest. Good luck and I hope to see you there.

1- I would like to learn more about how my web analytics can help me further grow my business. I know the basics of web analytics, but I want to learn how to dive deeper.
2- With your indirect help, as well as Chris Brogan and Mark Goren, I have learned how to use available tools to listen to what is being said online and use that for business development. I’ve also learnt how to use Twitter applications to build stronger ties with interesting and relevant people.

  • Luis London

1- Learning more about PR and Social Media will definitively be helpful to build stronger marketing skills. Working on it, one step at the time.

2- Since in the studio we started organizing events every two months we have improved our relationships with our FB and Twitter followers, as well with the media. We now have more visitors to our website and a stronger presence, who translates in new projects. This is just one way to make things happen.

  • Andrew Chen

    1. Tools that help business owners to be more productive in the social medial environment..

    2. Learned that simply having a presence on social media is not enough. We need to be more proactive with the tools, such as being more interactive with other people.

    Thank you!!!

  • James Taylor

    1. I would like to learn how to manage my time more efficiently. Time Management Skills. I think this is a huge value for any Internet Marketer and Social Media Enthusiast .

    2. This year I have learned that engaging facebook pages do offer real results. It is important to keep active and never give up. It is worth the investment in the long run, which is something we have to teach our clients.

    Thanks!

  • Craig Francis

    1. Brand measurement; positioning services in an exploding marketplace

    2. Taking the risk inherent in making a connection (tip of the hat to Jeffrey Gitomer); regularly reviewing all projects on actionable and big-picture levels (tip of the hat to David Allen)

  • Mark John

    1. I’m definitely interested in learning more about analyzing the impact of brands in specific marketplaces and how social media campaigns are performing. One of the greatest challenges I face in convincing my employer that social media is a worthwhile investment in time is the difficulty in measuring the ROI of the time taken to be involved properly. While there are obvious means, I’m interested in delving deeper.

    2. In the last year I have learned to find out what makes a target audience tick, what they want, what they’re like, and speak to them on a level that attracts and inspires them to action. Speaking directly to the target audience in conjunction with keyword research has increased traffic to our business’ website by almost 1,000% this year.

  • Jonathan

    1- Adwords : A powerfull marketing tool
2- Learned that social media is so usefull for business, using Facebook API like Facebook connect.

  • Mike Gero

    1) I’m looking for ideas and strategies to help stand out amidst the noise. These days it seems it’s harder to reach people through more traditional online channels, such as email, because of the ever-increasing deluge in our inbox. Social media just adds another facet to that challenge, especially in a B2B world.
    2) The ever-increasing importance of the value of your online brand, or those you can associate yourself with. Concrete examples include response to webinars that include marquee customers or top-tier analysts. This isn’t really new, but, in reference to my first answer, has been one successful tactic in helping to stand out amidst the online white noise.

  • Laura Carmosino

    1. I would really like to expand my knowledge of monitoring social media analytics. Which are the best tools to measure analytics and what do the analytics mean for the brand.

    2. One of the things I realized is that each social networking site has it’s own unique audience. Do not speak (write) the same on Twitter as you would on Facebook. Adjust your messages to fit the different audiences.

  • Xavier Chaillot

1 – My objective this year is to learn and implement a lead nurturing and lead scoring solution to complement our marketing infrastructure.

2 – One of the thing that I learned this year was that without solid basis, there is no point in going sophisticated with your marketing effort. Market knowledge, segmentation and targeting and excellent messaging are the keys, no the media.

  • Riku

    1. Engaging conversations with interesting people about important issues that I’m working with.

    2. That you don’t need to be a fire hose to do valuable marketing. Focus and engagement are important. That makes the conversations interesting.

  • Alex Kovalenko

#1. Engage our social networking members / IT candidates into a purposeful conversation.
#2. Posting our tech jobs on Twitter can bring quality candidates in if done correctly.

  • Matt Nelson

    1. To get off the “treadmill of whitepaper/webinar lead generation” and learn how to start a movement.
    2. That people have always been social. Engage them in old media and new media with this in mind.

  • Kelly Rusk

    1. What skills or tools do you want to learn before 2011 to help you improve your marketing efforts or your professional skills?

I’d love to learn the most effective way to convince management and others the power of permission marketing and adding value to a community and how to move away from an interruption and push-marketing focus to a company that understands community building and lives and breaths it.

    2. What, specifically, have you learned since the New Year about marketing and social media that has worked for you and provided your business (or your clients) with value through results?

With the help of Avinash’s latest book, Web Analytics 2.0, I’m learning how to measure social media using web analytics and how to truly make data-driven decisions. It’s awesome!!

  • N. Rivard

    1. to learn how to monetize my blog
    2. I learn that the Whuffie Factor goes a long way

  • Hassan

    1. I’d like to become more web savvy, learning programs such as Dreamweaver, as well as web metrics.

    2. Specific targeting: contacting people who are interested in the product and letting things build from there.

    Thank you!

  • Diane Bourque

    1. I want to learn to use my time more efficiently.
    2. I’ve learned that professionals spend 50% of their time “selling” themselves.
So little time = so much to do! I want to learn how to maximize every minute that I’ve got.
    Hope I win!!!

  • Anne Dardick

I want to spend this year challenging myself to explode my concept of what my business can be. I want Dot & Lil to be so much more than a traditional business that talks AT people. I want to keep going on my quest to bring people truthful information about skin care–using permission marketing and social media to do so, while building something closer to a community than a customer base.

In the past year I’d say my biggest social media or marketing lesson has been to truly understand that you get out of things what you put in, both quantity and quality wise! I’ve learned that engaging with one is better than lecturing 10. I’ve learned that it pays to be a well-rounded marketing package! And that most people have bad grammar :0)

  • Annabelle Agnew

    1. How to better our online presence by engaging and interesting the community we want to build – instead of overwhelming them with facts.

    2. What hasn’t been a lesson this year? Ha ha! But biggest lesson is in finding our target audience and listening to them.

  • Tobin Howes

1 – The best strategy for drawing in new users and how to engage them immediately upon arrival to our website. As well as how to maintain an engaging and fun community.

2 – I am currently working on SEO and have discovered the importance of social media and social networking. The enhanced focus on those areas have increased awareness of our website a great deal. Blogging is such a huge factor as well. I believe that these areas will replace PPC campaigns as the focus of so many SEO’ers because they automatically connect you with your target audience, with a higher probability of a click-through.

I would appreciate these tickets so much, I have just started working in the .com world and have so much to learn. With no formal marketing or PR training under my belt, I believe I would benefit the most out of anyone by attending this conference.

  • Kelly L

    1. I hope to learn more about how to mobilize a website. I’m also curious about ways to maximize the potential of viral marketing (“going viral”).

    2. Success in marketing and social media should be measured by quality not quantity—know WHO is following and sharing your content and adjust your efforts accordingly.

Thanks, and looking forward to the conference!

  • Ilhan Kudeki

    1. The skills that I would most like to learn to improve my marketing efforts are Copywriting and Tracking/Analytics. I am creating a number of websites that I will monetize with ad space and it would be fantastic to be able to find out what copy works best on these sites to sell this space.

    2. The main thing that I’ve learned has been to determine up-front what your “superpowers” are, as Seth Godin calls them. Like in the Justice League comics, where every hero had his/her own unique powers, you have to be clear on what yours are. This is the only way that people are going to know where to place you in their minds and what you can do for them.

    Cheers,
    Ilhan

  • Olivier

    1) The main skill I would love to learn, would be how to persuade big clients to use social media (and don’t just hire community managers), without making them see the money, but the customer satisfaction first.

    2) The main thing I’ve learned, or at least, I learned to understand, is that you have to give, to be given back. We gave a lot of macarons with my friends at @boutiquepointg.
The one you give are not necessarily the ones who give back. But that doesn’t matter : someone will know that, and you will earn something for being generous. You don’t know what, but you’ll definitely earn something.

  • Aaron

1-I’d really like to learn more about marketing strategy and how to integrate the strategy into the day to day operations.

2- Test test test. We are all too close to be able to see it completely objectively and our instincts need to be verified in a lot of cases.
